Subject Overview

Get Set 4 Music is a comprehensive, progressive, whole school music scheme that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum by following the Model Music Curriculum.  Through bright and engaging resources, Get Set provides high quality lessons throughout Key Stage 1 and beyond.  Children have the opportunity to use percussion instruments and sing to support their learning.  Music also supports the learning of many other subjects, such as Maths, and has been shown to aid memory and recall.  Music lifts spirits and helps foster a positive environment for learning.

Curriculum Intent

Our school aims to inspire all children to develop a life-long love of music.  Through a high quality, fun and engaging music curriculum, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture creative, confident children who will strive to reach their full musical potential.  We want our children to have access to a high-quality music education which engages and inspires them to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.  The scheme provides lesson plans, which we are able to scaffold and adapt according to need, assessment, clear progression and sequencing, along with engaging resources to support learning.

Curriculum Implementation

Music is taught once a week across the school in a dedicated lesson, however music features across all curriculum areas, including songs supporting the learning of subjects such as Maths and Geography.  Children learn music through six topic based units throughout the year.  These units build on previous learning, both in their current year group and previous years.  Children also enjoy a weekly singing assembly, promoting a sense of community and a fun start to the day.  Teachers are encouraged to use music in all areas of the curriculum to support learning.

What a typical lesson looks like

In a typical lesson, children have the opportunity to sing and play percussion instruments.  They can make links with other areas of their curriculum learning, for example Year 2 learn music using links to their project on The Great Fire of London.  Get Set 4 Music incorporates the learning of music theory, including notation, alongside instruments and song.

SEND and Inclusion

Music lessons at PRL are inclusive and supportive for all children.  Where necessary, lessons are adapted to enable all learners take part and be successful.

How can I support my child in Music?

Talk to your child about music:

  • music you hear
  • music you like
  • songs sung in assembly
  • what they've learnt in lessons

Encourage your child to share their opinions on music and to listen to a variety of genres.
